The Department’s First EV, a Ford Mustang Mach-E, Joins the Fleet of Homeland Security.

The Department of Homeland Security has added an EV – the Mustang Mach-E to its line-up of security vehicles. This is the first Ford EV ever to join the department’s fleet as the department looks to embrace and use new technology. This move reflects the growing popularity and adoption of EVs by civilians as well as government agencies.

DHS has over 50,000 vehicles on its rolls and most of these are used by law enforcement, to the tune of 60%. As one of the top five agencies of the federal government, it needs a lot of vehicles to work efficiently. According to news reports, DHS currently uses Blue Oval vehicles which use fuel for power. Once Mach-E joins the fleet, the transition to eco-friendly alternatives will start.

The motivating reason behind the Mach-E adoption is to promote and support American car manufacturers. Another reason to adopt EVs is to also cut down on carbon emissions – EVs can help in this area. DHS is also looking forward to seeing how the Ford EV and others will help in mission performance.

Some police departments have chosen different EV models in their efforts to choose alternative transportation modes. Some choices are the Model Y from Tesla and the F-150 Lightning from Ford. Now with the availability of the Mach-E, this seems to be another good option for the police. Ford is opening up their pre-order schedule for the Mach-E before price increases take effect in 2023.
