India starts offering 5G services to customers of Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone.

5G is the short form of fifth-generation cellular technology. It provides higher speed and lower latency in comparison to 4G technology. The peak speed of 5G is 20 Gbps while 4G speed is 1Gbps. 5G will utilize the unused spectrum of 4G. The digital experience in 5G is superior due to the use of machine learning technology.

The government of India acknowledged the importance of 5G technology. The government viewed that 5G technology would help in the growth of the economy.

On 1st October 2022, the Government of India formally launched 5G services in India. The function took place at Indian Mobile Congress 2022, a technology exhibition held in New Delhi.

Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunication company has announced that 5G services will be made available in 8 Indian cities initially. The cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Nagpur, and Siliguri. According to the company sources, 5G services will be made available across India by 2024. Bharti Airtel also informs that it would charge 5G at the same rate as the existing 4G initially.

Reliance Jio has announced the beta trial of 5G services in four cities from 5 October 2022. The cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Varanasi. As per the company the offer is to a select set of customers. Unlimited 5G data will be available to this set of customers at 1 Gbps+ speed. The company plans to cover the 5G network all across the country by 2023.

Vodafone Idea is yet to specify any timeline for the 5G launch perhaps due to its current debt-laden financial position.
